Export Packing & Preparation Advice
We will respond to your rate request
with cost confirmation + carrier details.
Please Ask Us for a Rate Confirmation once the cargo is ready.
Note that AIR FREIGHT SHIPMENTS are subject to spot rates and carrier space availability,
meaning that all air carrier rates are valid for up to TEN days.
If the cargo is not yet ready for shipping within the next 2 weeks, please come back to us closer to the actual time ready.
We will need to know the exact 3 dimensions and weight for each piece, pallet, crate or other package to be shipped.

Palletized Air Cargo & Sea Cargo
International LCL Shipping Service
ORIGIN & DESTINATION SERVICES
Rates for air/sea transport do not including export packaging.
Options (1) Pro Packed - we can arrange for our 3rd party contractors/movers to package for you/our shippers.
Option (2) Self Packed - you can follow our general guidelines and advice to
package suitably for export.
In this self packed option (2), we can provide advice on methods & sources for obtaining materials and how to best prepare the cargo.
Please take note of our important advice, regarding heated treated wood, and stackable cargo.
As it is with any shipment that is booked with Sefco Export, we carefully look over and help guide the entire process to a successful completion.
DOOR PICKUP This is often arranged in conjunction to the Air Cargo / LCL Sea Cargo booking.
For an INLAND TRANSPORT (door) rate confirmation
We need to know the street address to determine the accessibility,
a contact name/phone number at the pickup location, along with the total (3) dimensions and weight for each item (pallet or suitable export-secure package).
Almost all cargo that moves on a truck will need to be on a pallet, secured together with both plastic stretch wrap and thereafter banded securely onto the pallet. Anything less may be risky. Pickup of loose boxes (needing exact dims & weight of each piece)
are subject to handling charges in addition to basic trucking costs.

Avoid damage by packing very securely.
|
See what it looks like to build a small pallet load of
boxed cargo, suitable for commercial shipment.
The Process
(1) Start with getting one or more pallet(s),
staged and ready for use.
Boxes and packing materials
These can often be bought locally in stores like Home Depot.
Use their store finder to see if there's one conveniently located near you.
There are also many online suppliers of materials, such as U-Line. For Specialy Materials - large "bulk"
containers made from corrugated cardboard, and plastic pallets on which to place the carton(s) - see out links below.
We recommend using "heavy pound test" (strong) cartons.
First you box up your cargo into cartons (or other wrapped & secured packages).
Each box should be securely taped. Flimsy packaging can lead to damage.
Make a packing list.
Each box is assigned a number. From # 1 to the last box.
Write the corresponding ascending number on each box.
When you know the total number of boxes,
write "# ___ of ___(total number)" on each piece.
Our website has sample packing lists and other forms.
For the list: keep it SIMPLE, and correct, avoid writing "Misc", but describe the general term, eg.,
BOOKS. Do not include anything hazardous.
Foodstuff is only shipped in commercial quantities, never with personal property.
Be prepared to have two versions, one list (A) with no value, and another list (B)
showing a value next to each item (even if the value is nominal).
For AIRFREIGHT - include the 3 dimensions of each box on your (A) list.
Be aware: "All cargo tendered for transport by air is subject to a search or inspection in accordance with federal regulations. Any person or entity who tenders cargo for transportation by air must consent to a search or inspection, or their cargo will be refused. Consent to screen authorization is required to ensure that shippers are aware that all shipments are subject to screening."
When we book your shipment
our Export Dept assigns you cargo a Booking Number.
We'll send you Printable Labels (PDF/by email)
with that Booking Number on it, 1-label for each piece booked.
If we ship it as 1-pallet (with several numbered boxes within)
there will be only 1-label issued to place on the cargo
so the trucker receives everything as 1 piece.
If we ship 2 or more pallets / or crates/trunks, etc
there will be 1-label for Each Pallet/unit
being picked up, ie., pallet # 1 / 3, # 2 / 2, # 3 / 3, etc.
Important Caveats:
(1) If air-cargo is shipped as individual boxes, they must be extremely sturdy and suitable for handling by trucker and air carrier.
Loose boxes are at risk of damage and loss. Improperly or insufficiently packed cargo can be rejected by truckers, air & sea carriers.
Secured onto a pallet is the correct way to ship smaller LCL cargo loads (sea/air).
(2) Provide us the exact origin address & contact name/number for a rate to pickup (by trucker).
Cargo going for export by air always required a trucker transfer.
Private individual deliveries to a seaport/airport terminal is in most cases not suitable;
port security credentials (TWIC, etc) for most terminals are required.
Therefore a suitable LCL/LTL small cargo trucker will be assigned to the task of correctly moving the cargo.
Truckers do not perform any packaging services nor provide labor beyond their normal scope (use of pallet jacks, liftgate truck operating, handling deliver documents, driving).
A draft AWB Air WayBill or Sea B/L will be created for the shipment,
and export declaration filed online by Sefco, as agent,
with AES/US Customs as is mandatory for US exports.
|
(2) On the day of pickup,
position the pallet where it can be accessible
for a trucker with a "high-low" pallet jack to come and collect it.
Build the pallet by placing your cargo
and cartons on it, from the ground up.
(3) Bring the cartons outside, and place them onto the pallet.
(4) Stack the boxes into a square shape, and start applying stretch film wrap
over and around the cartons.
(5) Apply "Plastic Stretch Wrap", to protect & unitize the cargo,
securing the goods being shipped into
1-piece, suitable for transportation.
(6) Secure the unit with straps.
Poly-plastic straps are good;
long strips of very strong plastic.
This secures the cargo onto the pallet.
(7) Avoid having "loose" boxes.
Protect against risk, damage, theft.
What may be suitable for domestic transport
may not be sufficient for consolidation sea container transport.
(8) LCL/LTL truckers normally use a "high low" pallet jack and a "lift gate" truck
to lift & move the cargo from ground level, in and out of the truck,
for onward transportation. Cargo that is insufficiently secured
(securely strapped to pallet, or in wooden crates) run the risk of being damaged in transit.
Practically all smaller cargo shipments move on pallets.
Crates usually have a pallet underneath to allow handling by folklift.
Handling
Pallets are often stacked...
|
...and moved by fork-lift equipment.
|
Many nations require wooden packaging to be heat treated.
To avoid the need for fumigation or rejection of bug-infested wood, most new wooden pallets and crates come already heat treated, and are marked as such.

Advice regarding LCL Export Cargo by Sea
from our shipping industry partners:
"Cargo must be stackable,
seaworthy packed for export
in consolidated containers.
For non-stackable cargo, ocean freight
may change to be based on container height."

(9) All cargo is subject to re-measurement
at the airport/seaport receiving terminal.
(10) Warehouse Services
This is a heavy metal engine, bubble-wrapped and banded securely onto a wooden pallet. This is an economical way to ship.
Such very small loads, are not "stackable" and are often subject to minimun BL charges for shipping internationally, starting at @ 100-kg by air and @ min 1-cbm / 35 cubic feet by sea. If smaller, its the same minimum basic air/sea transportation cost.
Woden pallets must have a "heat treated" seal on it or else it can not be shipped to many countries due to potential for pests/contamination from old used wood products.
Therefore we recommend using PLASTIC PALLETS for most overseas LCL sea/air shipments.

Origin Services - Export Packing and Crating
Some cargo and destinations may require use of a wooden shipping crate, either open "skeleton framed" where the cargo is visible for easier inspection (motorcycles, etc) or as a completely sealed wooden case for high value goods.
As a general indication, the cost for making a custom-made wooden crate starts at USD 250 minimum and up. Based on overall size.
Excluding any transport fees. Available at designated CFS warehouses usually near to the major seaports/airports.
Prefabrigated Crates and Cases
These can be purchased online from various suppliers such as U-Line.

Depending on the task requirements, Sefco can make arrangements with known specialist export packers & craters for larger special projects.
Sefco Export Management Company, Inc. is a licensed/bonded OTI ocean freight forwarder. Our quotes are for Port to Port sea shipping services. Local services at both ends (inland trucking, packaging, other) are additional to the basic Ocean Freight Forwarding. We handle the booking with the selected ocean carrier, process the mandatory US Export docs and help manage the overall process for the smoothest handling possible. We handle both commercial cargo shipments as well as personal property/HHG personal effects shipping for private invididuals, for whom we have free online guides.
Origin Services & other local expenses
All origin jobs (packing, crating, any dispatch of licensed labor teams/movers) are quoted on a case by case basis and subject to our applicable handling charge plus labor/materials, which would be in addition to basic freight forwarding transportation. There must be a valid export/import transport booking with Sefco (as forwarder) for us to arrange any supplemental origin/destination services.

Heated treated wooden liftvans... ...are often used for shipments of loose packed Household Goods, available in bulk quantities from the manufacturers or by arrangement with local export packers/movers who have lift-vans preordered and available on-hand.
